Credit unions, in general exist to help people, not make a profit. In fact the credit union motto is "People Helping People". The goal of credit unions is to serve all members and this policy creates loyalty among members. Members know their credit union is there for them in good and bad times, for better or for worse.

The "People Helping People" philosophy was created for communities in which credit unions operate. The involvement of credit unions and their employees extend to or cover charitable activities by donating money, time and their resources. Credit unions provide a secure financial choice for all members of the community they operate in. Credit unions are an economic democracy with each credit union member having equal ownership and one vote — regardless of how much money a member has on deposit.

Boeing Employees Credit Union, which was the idea of a few Boeing employees, has surely benefited thousands of Boeing employees, their families and everyone throughout Washington State. Over the years, Boeing Employees Credit Union has grown and changed with the times, but it has always remained true to their people helping people roots. It has also remained non-profit and this ensures all members to get the best value for their membership.

Established in 1935, Boeing Employees Credit Union better known as BECU has its roots in the Northwest. Its dramatic rise is attributed to low interest rates on loans, high dividends, and exceptional member value.

The collapsed economy of 1935 gave rise to initiative among Boeing employees to form a credit union in order to help themselves along with other fellow employees. The monthly magazine, Reader’s Digest, is attributed to be the source of information and inspiration to the organization’s founders. The total beginning asset of this endeavor was $9.00, the total amount contributed by its 18 founders who each gave the union 50 cents.

After 17 years, the original $9.00 asset grew steadily and eventually reached millions of dollars. Today, Boeing Employees Credit Union boasts of 525,000 members and $7.9 billion worth of assets. Boeing Employees Credit Union is the 4^th largest credit union in the .
